You pay like $60, if anyone claims it they get the value of the car, if no one claims it after 5 years or something, you get the $60 back. It's been a decade since I had to do that, I don't remember the exact details and that was in Minnesota.

Usually they didn't have titles, so I would apply for a lost title in the spring through the DMV, takes a few months for the paperwork, and by fall I'd have it titled and ready to go for the winter. Been a number of years since I did that so I don't remember specific details, but I got all the info I needed from the DMV on how to do it, so you should be able to do the same.

I have tried it once and gave up after a year. Basically the easiest way is to find the last registered owner and get them to apply for a duplicate title, but the dmv will not give you that info unless you know someone who works there. You can also go through a title service but that costs over a grand.

I tried it on a 97 Trans Am convert, I baught without a title from a wrecking yard, ended up parting it out after because the state wouldn't issue registration without a title signed over to me from the previous owner. Basically up here there is no way to obtain a title if you do not knwo who owned it. Only exception is cars like 30+ years old that haven't had current registration within like 15 years.
