Are there any problems that are fairly prevalent that I should look for when buying one? Also, obviously depending on how hard it was used and how well it was maintained, what is their average lifespan before major problems start occurring? In other words - do they pretty readily last up into the higher mileage range, like 150-200k or more?

If you look at a 2002(some of the newer ones have the problem, but not as common) it might need to have a fuel line replaced under the intake manifold. When its cold it leaks and makes the whole car smell like gas.

Too many people do up/down/exhaust and tune, then return to stock and clear codes for a sale. derek is right though, tranny is the biggest issue.

Thats the main thing. if it feels smooth like butter than its golden. There arent many other problems with them. make sure the clutch is in good shape because those are expensive. the subarus ecu is very sensitive so if there is something wrong with the motor it will throw a code, ( check engine Light), so bring a code reader and drive it around long enough to see if it will throw one if possible.
