I've done some research and found out that the convergence drivers need to be replaced.

I was wondering if anybody knew of someone with any experience fixing tv's or soldering chips onto circuit boards. Any help would be much appreciated. Willing to pay, just lookin for a better deal than what the tv repair shop is asking.

There's a place on North University right before Main Ave. that fixes TVs. I've never been there but it might be worth checking out. I think it's called Bill's something or other.

Don't go to Gene's TV. I've had nothing but bad experiences there. I took a TV there twice to have squealing transistors fixed, only to be charged both times and still have a problem when I brought it home. The second time, they had the TV for like 3 months while "waiting for parts." I really don't think they did anything at all.

Yep, I know they have always had a rule like that. They have always been very accomodating to me...they actually soldered an ECU of mine for free...

I think the OP should take the board out yourself, find the parts, and just take that in to get soldered..it'll be like $30...

That's a pretty good idea actually. I think I'll just do that.

Interestingly enough, as I was in Gene's TV 2 days ago I had no problem seeing the sign that said "$15 fee for and diagnose (or w/e wording they gave)."

if it's just a soldering job, anyone can do that (unless it's SMT). But you have to know for sure that's what the problem is.

I had Gene's TV look at a receiver for me. They told me it would be $100 to fix (a 20 year old, $100 item). Not being interested, I then asked them for the parts that needed to be replaced, and they refused to tell me anything. Then when i didn't agree to have them fix it, they charged me a "Bench fee" for having looked at it at all.

The business model there is a fucking mess. I'm fine paying someone that does good diagnostic work for their time and expertise. That's not what they're doing though.
