You get more than half the length of the car for the pedestrian body to accelerate and decelerate.</p>
<p dir="auto">This is preferable to being stopped [or not stopped, or partially stopped -- YUCK], by the windshield glass, or some combination of the windshield glass and the roof [like arms/chest through glass, head/neck stopped by the roof.  Oops :)]</p>
