i have just picked up a98 pontiac gtp. installed walboro fuel pump, intake, pulley, going to cet headers in a while. this weekend i am puting a couple pistons in it. i bought it not running. wa told it was just the pump, but the idiot i got the car from did a pulley swap and that was it. so, i am correcting the problem with an exhaust and a tune. i can do all the mechanical work, but i cannot tune a car, i have no knowledge, sortware to do this . im a fulltime mechanic, and have a lot of other stuff to do right now besides screw around with TRYING to teach myself to tune a car.

so, who can tune these gm cars? cheaper the better. i live in devils lake, so also the closer the better.

oh, and im also getting 1.9 rockers i think. in a few months anyways.

But 87/89 is a good point, I guess I just assumed(you know what that does lol) most people ran 91+ in there anyway.

They make a 2.55" pulley actually. I make about 5PSI on my 3.8" but my blower has high milage and I have good exhaust so its not crazy to loose 1-2PSI just making it flow better aparently.

I asked about that pulley Vs. header thing seeing so many cars with 3.4" pulleys and so few headers a few months ago on a GP board and 15 or so people said headers and nobody said pulley. The overall message was "only people that dont know what they are doing put pulleys on before headers."

It doesnt suprise me that a 3.4" would damage the motor if the previous owner ran 87 and stock exhaust. I see a bit of knock on a 3.8" and good exhaust on 89 so more boost, less flow and worse fuel would possibly cause it.

There must be some new information out lately since I used to be a w-body follower. The 3.4 pulley is the largest one you can buy isn't it? I think the stock is what, 3.6? That V6 with headers and exhaust = nastiest sound ever. Gross.

You just end up boost stacking and causing unnecessary heat and knock. You wont blow the motor up but it probably would be slower or no faster.

You say your replacing pistons? Theres a good chance the pulley caused that. Also, how big is the pulley?

I used HPtuners to tune my firebirds NA 3800 ECM to supercharged tune when I stuck the GTP motor in it. It isnt hard to figgure out and the only bad part is the $500 entry cost. But if you look at it you get a universal OBD2 code scanner, can check for knock all the time, can change stuff for free once you license it. I havnt messed with spark or anything on mine but thats just because its winter and I dont need any more power than it has right now. I went in knowing nothing but im confident in my abilities in it now. Sorta, hahaha....

Essentially id suggest buying HPtuners, it will come in usefull in the future. Or you can drive to Minneapolis and have CJtunes tune it for you. Its like $300 but ive never heard anything bad about him.

You might even be able to find a self-flash kit for the ecu's to do your own tune. Try www.clubgp.com/ or www.grandprixforums.net/.
