like knock like detonation? or like engine knocking sounds? prolly set base timing then depending on how hard it is to take off the timing belt take that beast off and make sure cam timing is correct.

Not sure if it has plug wires but if it does could you possibly have mixed 2 wires up? Sounds a lot like the symptoms my car had when we did the cam swap and hooked up wire #8 to plug #7 and wire #7 to plug #8.

No it wasn't the wires that got switched. I went over there late last night because I think I found out what happened.

When the original owners brought it to a gas station to see what was up, they did a quick "timing job" well, that really screwed up the engine because not only was the Harmonic balancer off from tdc, the cam timing was completely 180 degrees off. I went and took everything apart yesterday and took off the timing belt and am now currently working on getting the driver's side cam timed. I have the pax side done. Hopefully I'll have it running by the end of tomorrow.

What a complete set of dumbass's on the gas stations part...I hate idiots.

                  UPDATE!

Alright, so now I'm convinced the gas station guys fucked everything up.

I went and talked to Valley imports today about finding a timing mark to line the camshafts up to. They said and I quote, "All you have to do with the cam's is line up the two bigger holes on the oblong retainers on the outside of the camshafts, and get the crankshaft to TDC, you'll be set. Put on your tensioner pulley, and harmonic balancer, and your set to go."

I did exactly that, and ended up right where I was before. The idiots at the station screwed everything up. They put the retainers on wrong and the only way for me to fix it is to go out and spend another 350 on a tool I'll use ONCE and it'll be fixed. Or, I can rotate the shaft 180 degrees and it'll be set.

After I put everything back on, I was WAY low on compression. Before I messed with anything, I had 150 psi's of compression and after I put everything back together, I had 20 psi's. A little less than perfect if you ask me.

                  Now, I have two options:

                  1. Take everything back apart, rotate the shafts 180 degrees and not care what the retainers are doing...

                  2. Take it to Valley imports, have them make everything the way the factory did it and spend another 900 dollars to do it.

I'm willing to take everything apart once more...I only paid a grand for the car.

Joel, I'll probably give you a call tomorrow.

Alright well, the audi is going to need a new engine...I've been thinking about putting in Audi's 2.7 turbo motor, but I'm going to do a little more research and see if it will fit with a little fabricating...I may just put in the regular motor and get an A4 with the money I get for the 6...we'll see what happens...I really liked that A4 out at p10...

I have reason to believe that when the gas station tried to time the car, they messed up the outer holes on the camshaft retainers, they got them backwards...so when you line them up like they are supposed to be from the factory, they are totally out of sync, and make everything all screwed up. I could bring it into Valley imports to have them do a timing job, but not only is that 900 dollars, I also have reason to believe that a rod bearing has gone out...when I tried to crank over the engine, I can hear the rod moving on the crankshaft...1100 dollars and I can have a new engine with 78,000 miles on it and that way for the new owner some day, they won't have to worry about any serious trouble with the car.

I told them what we were doing before I got the place, and it's 88 bucks a month. No need to worry about the payment, all I want is someone to help me get the thing ready to pull...

Audi called me today, we either have a spun rod bearing, or a bad oil pump. Only time will tell whether or not it really is the bearing. I'm siding with that though...probably is...

Thanks, but we are just taking it back. Even if it were the bearings, there's no way I'd be able to do that in a 10x25 storage unit. lol, SO, we are looking for a civic hatch or coupe anywhere from 100-1200. This isn't the forum for that though, so just pm me. Close the thread.
