Fixing TV?
-
I bought my Westinghouse 42" HDTV LCD 720p at Best buy around Feb or March of this year for like $1,300. I sold it to my friend recently for $700 dollars. But he only gave me $400 first because he's broke and he told me that he will give me more when he get more money.
A few days or maybe a week later he told me that the TV doesn't work anymore. I swear that before i sold it to him it worked completely fine but now he says the LCD doesn't want to turn on or it's goes blank when it's on. I'm like what? He's like maybe it's burnt out. I did research before about LCD TVs that it does not do burnt outs. It won't be as bright as when you first bought it or fade-away brightness but it only happens when you use it for around 50,000 hours. I just bought it about a year now, how can I use it that much??
I don't know what to do now guys, Should I take it back and throw it in the garage... what about my other $300 dollars? He said that he's not going to give me more because I sold him something that he can't use. Well do you guys have any opinion on what I should do or how to fix it? How about knowing any cheap place in town that fixes TV? Damn bad luck...

You fucked up buying a shitty brand tv and you fucked up again by not getting all your money right away. Anyways, you should have a one year warrranty so just take it back to Best Buy....just make sure you have all the original packaging, because if you don't they won't warranty it. That's how Westinghouse will get out of their "factory warranty".
Westinghouse
If the set is purchased from Best Buy it must be returned to the store for warranty service regardless of the size of the TV, according to the Westinghouse customer service department. If purchased elsewhere, Westinghouse customer service must be called to determine if the set is in need of factory service. Westinghouse will issue a return authorization if they determine factory services is needed and it will pay the freight both ways if the TV was purchased within the last 90 days. From 90 days to the end of the one-year warranty, the consumer must pay the return freight and supply the original packaging or a suitable equivalent. Westinghouse does not sell replacement cartons and packing. Out of warranty service is available locally in select markets according to its customer service department. If there is no local factory authorized servicer in your area, the set owner must pay the freight both ways and the cost or repair parts and labor, which will be determined after Westinghouse receives and examines the malfunctioning television.

Gene's TV does a good job. They do charge a $15 estimate fee if you don't get it fixed there though.
No matter how well you know the person, don't EVER fall for the "I'll give you the rest of the money later and you give it to me now" deal. I've learned that the hard way more than once. You sold him the TV when it worked fine, then it broke. You wouldn't fix a car that you sold someone if it broke. Tell him to either give you the rest of your money, or get the TV back and keep his money, then use it to fix it.

There was a very informative article that I believe Jim put up about buying TV's and the return rate. That article made me spend an extra $800 on my LCD. It is very important to me that if something goes wrong, there will be coverage. I also usually NEVER purchase the service plan from Best Buy, but for $200 or so on a $2000 tv it seemed very comforting to have the security that if anything goes wrong, it is covered.
Cliffnotes: Don't buy a inexpensive LCD/Plasma/DLP....cause really in the next 5 years you will probably spend as much as a higher end TV in repairs.
I wish you the best of luck on repair, and consider this a tough lesson... I also agree that you should NEVER do 'payments' on anything, unless YOU keep the item until it is fully paid for.
Sorry man

Get your $300 from him. It's his problem it broke, and its you did HIM a favor for letting the $300 ride.
Are you sure it doesnt have a warranty at all from the manufactuer? You might have some luck bringing it to best buy and bitching... is that model still for sale?

yea gene's tv rocks.. because of their inability to get parts no faster then 6 weeks, their inability to fix my tv once those parts arrived, and their inability to provide any sort of customer service, i ended up going from a 52" crt projector to a50" 1080p plasma

if you want to wait six weeks for parts, two weeks for them to get around to fixing it, and then let it sit in the back without calling to schedule delivery of your tv for a few more days, by all means give Gene a jingle.
best buy no longer uses them to warranty tv's larger then 27" anymore because of situations just like mine. They now use their own geek squad to warranty larger tvs.
my father's brother in law dropped off a tv there for repair and let it go for six months(yes half a year) before he went in to get it back. when he told them the situation they refused to give him his tv because "they had money out in parts that have yet to be delivered and cannot be expected to take that sort of loss just because you dont want to wait(not quite verbatum, but i will never forget standing there listening to the asshat ramble)"

I called there once to try to get some info on cost/time to fix a TV and he made it seem like I raped his sister or something. Ive never had someone be so pissed to get a phone call. (Except for Hazer's, who would rather take a dump on your face then talk to you)
