One of my foreign friend changed his name because he just got his citizenship. He was wondering if there is a place in the F-M area where he could go to transfer his old credit history account into his new name or anyone know at least a phone number that he can call? He tried to buy a phone service but when they checked his new driver license saying that "you have no credit score and it'll be charging you $100 to start a new phone service." He's like yes I do but it's in my old name...

lol :icon_scratch: I have no clue about this.... help anyone?

How do you have credit history before your a citizen?

You basically can't get a credit card or a phone without having a US banking account + SSN...

And your credit score is tied to your SSN...

        What jim said.

A job with proof of income and a bank account(checking and savings, both with positive balance) or two is a good place to start. And if he can handle financial responsibility, a credit card will help building credit.

Unless he wants to wait a while for his credit to start to get better, he should just pay the $$$$ and suck it up. and make sure he doesnt miss or make late payments.

Well he had been living here for more then 10 years.

Within that time he got best buy credit card as well as other credit cards. So his credit is good. He doesn't want to waste all those years of good credits and start over again.

He does have a US banking account too which he had to changed his name. Like I was asking before, is there a way to get his old credit back into his new name?

Maybe look up the number for the Credit agencies and talk to them. More than likely they will be able to handle it.

Anytime you try to obtain credit, they will use your SSN to search your credit history. If he did obtain and maintain credit in the past, it should be carried over, no matter what his name is. Although I am not an immigrant, I did change my last name in 2000 and had no issues with credit carrying over. If he was told to pay a $100 retainer on his phone line, perhaps he missed a few Best Buy payments and his credit isn't as good. A good way to check out his credit status is to go to www.annualcreditreport.com and obtain his free credit report.

If all else fails, he will need to contact the 3 reporting agencies and see what his options are. www.annualcreditreport.com will give you the necessary information on contacting these 3 agencies.

                ^word.

But, if he was not a US citizen, I do not believe he would have a SSN. Is that correct? If not, now that he has one, he starts from scratch.

I'm curious to hear more about how this pans out. Where was he a citizen of before coming to the US, and why did it take 10 years for him to become a citizen? I'm not harassing, just trying to understand the situation. I deal with credit on a daily basis, and I'm just curious how this scenario would play out.
