i am guessing you want it to shoot cars? or is it for multi purposes or other purpose primarily?
looking for ease to put online?
looking to put on DVD or one of the HD DVD's
lots of questions to ask if you are considering HD video camera. at least i think so.

where all have you looked for info yet?
              where for prices?

Multi purposes mostly, i have done little research but i thought i would get others advise. My price is 600-1500 possibly... It also would be nice to be able to put it on computer and dvd...

i spent some time in jan-mar looking for a camcorder.
wanted to keep it under 500. wanted a bit of zoom to allow recording at the track as well as bring action closer at social events or family events.
wanted decent low light performance as it was going to HIN with me.
wanted as good a batt life as possible even if it meant larger battery purchase.
interested in straight to SD card, but in the end i have not used it like i thought i would. as the quality is only web worthy at best.

looking for the best quality without going HD. as i do not watch enough tv to warrant the purchase of a new tv. i still have a 7yr old 27" sony trinitron.

initially was gonna get a HDD based one. then i read some reviews and real world reports of quality not being good on them if you were wanting to put it on dvd to play back on tv.
then i wanted to save a step and was lookin at dvd based vid cams. decided against that because of cost of media and short amount of time on each dvd.

anything vhs is obsolete. though they are cheap as can be.
i stepped to miniDV due to lower cost, ability to connect by firewire to computer for transfer. and well the quality reflected the price ranges offered in this class.

this is where i chose to look. miniDV camcorders.
i shoot a canon DSLR camera so i chose to be brand loyal if possible. in the end after reading many reviews i was able to find a canon video camera to fit my needs. canon ZR850.
is it the best in class? in some areas yes. in a couple no.

i purchase my camera gear through www.bhphoto.com they are a new york brick and mortar store with a HUGE inventory and web presence. customer service has been top notch in the last 3yrs for me and many of my friends and photo forum members.

i did have to buy software to transfer video to computer then to dvd.

i started with reviews at bhphoto then hit google for camcorder reviews.

basically ya gotta know what you want. what you think you want and go from there.

I bought a sony fx-1 off ebay and have had no problems with it. It works very good. If your looking to spend around 1500 for a decent all around camera i would look at the Sony dvr-vx1000 around 800-1000 dollars or the dvr-vx2000 1500-1800 dollars depending on where you get it from. In the MSUM film department all we use is sony. You could also look into the sony pd-150 its a more professional one but still in your price range. And i would stick with minidv because tapes are cheap and you can easily transfer onto you computer to edit it and get it on dvd.
