a later model 4AG engine is the most popular and easiest choice. check out toysport.com

The 4AG from the AE101 (iirc this is the "black top" motor) isn't a bad way to go.

the AE86 doesn't need a ton of power to be a lot of fun. I don't know what kind of build you're doing, but the one I drove at Mid America had a stock engine. It had good tires and a nice suspension setup..including front camber plates. Biggest thing it needed was a LSD rear end. It never needed more power. I was passing much faster cars all day because with the stock motor and the goofyness of the AE86 chassis, you can just leave the thing floored and steer through everything, lifting now and then to pivot the car.

I think putting too much motor in it would ruin the character of the car.

Ooooh just off the top of head ill have to say; d15by block with a f20c head (millied of course) CTR rods and pistons, d17 intake manifold, and most important of all a a Huffy 10 speed custom tranny.

Add some ITB's and its too fast to handle.

          6000:1 compression = Driftcar.

how much you wanna spend? I would honestly say a Ecotec/M5 out of a solstice or if you have the cash, turbo'd eco/M5. Lightest, most power in N/A form you can really get. And a world of tuning and mod opportunity. Like they said above, a v8 in there would be way too much, but would be my 2nd choice LSx

eff the body kit, you are just gonna rip it off trying to drift anyway. Decide what you want to do with the car, then build it.

I'd just go with a 4ag... either built n/a with itbs or swap a s/c mr2 motor and turbo it instead...

Or, a better idea would be just sell the car to me... I want one, but can't find a decent one that doesnt have a retardedly inflated price tag due to driftzor wannabes...
