I ran into an issue w/ Midco once after about 6 months of service....I was getting too "hot" of a signal into my cable modem. Once they put a filter on to lower the signal power my speeds shot up dramatically again. I'd call them and let them know you are not getting advertised speeds.

What midco package do you have?

likewise! I have never reached that high of speed. Do you have docsis 3.0? and which package is it. I am tempted to switch to a 3.0 modem if it is worth it, but with the inconsistent speeds and ping times I have been thinking of switching.

but running the speed test right now I got these results:

        legacy image

but when I ran it yesterday I had terrible results as noted prior. That is the problem I have been having. very inconsistent connection (and I know it matters depending on who is all online at the same time since cable neighborhoods share nods) but when my speeds and ping is low 90% of the time and I am lagging like a bitch on xbox live, it pisses me off.

It would probably be worth your time to give them a call and ask if your setup can be checked. I never have issues with live and when I am downloading large files, I rarely dip below 15. Plus midco doesn't cap your bandwidth like most ISP's so excessive downloading or gaming doesn't drop you down to a lower speed tier, unlike CableOne.

i live a few blocks from the CO downtown. 7 down / 898kb up is the fastest thing qwest sells in the fargo market. my speeds are always locked at that in both directions.

qwest doesn't do any port filtering or other lameness that i've come across, but their CPE is all fucking garbage. plan on running whatever you get from them in bridged mode and put a real edge device behind it. also, if you are torrenting anything that people in the US care about (NBC shows, for instance), they will batch up complaints and then after they get 5 or 10 or wahtever they just shut off your connection without warning, so that is lame. Maybe once per year i will have some downtime that i have to call about, and then perhaps once a month i will have random connectivity problems (high packet loss, etc).

nick (or anyone else) -- do you know what business-class options are available (and where, generally) in fargo? is there metro ethernet downtown? BITD i knew a bit about ds1/ds3 provisioning but that was like 10 years ago and a different city. To go between qwest and NDSU i go to chicago and come back on sprintlink, for instance. Who has pops/peering here? what is backhaul like for the various locals?

You can get metro ethernet delivered in town by most major carriers. IdeaONE, Qwest and Midco all have their own fiber in the ground. Sprint will ride IdeaONE fiber if a circuit is ordered from them. I'm in the process of moving a lot of my customers to midco for fiber/voice services because they have built a really robust network.

Sprint and Qwest are the only tier 1 carries with pops in Fargo. 99% of the peering you'll find in this region occurs in Chicago however as that is the closest major NAP. That will likely never change.

                  test using this:

                  http://support-test.midco.net/

That will show you your speed to midco. You cannot guarantee that the speedtest that you are using has available bandwidth to give you a decent result.

I thought I had the package w/ 15 meg download, 2 upload, but I have never EVER seen my download below 30.

I'm not sure one their packages.

Also, my midco test and my speedtest.net tes were exactly the same tonight, 36 meg down, 2 up, 22 ping.

I've used both. They typically are similar if not nearly identical in results each time.

As a midco tech i will tell you the 85+ dl speeds is a glitch do to your router cache file.

Second If your speeds are that bad I then ask is the modem in the same location as to where we installed it??? If you moved it to another outlet theres your prob. Also if you put a splitter in there somewhere it will also screw with your speeds. With your 34 ping time I'd say this is the problem. As said before I'd check and see what kind of signals your getting to the modem. If all else fails call 1800-888-1300.

Now do you have a router by chance thats open wireless??? Is someone else on your network????

Router cache file? Huh? Please show me my routers cache file.

More likely, that speedtest is hosted on Mid-co's network, and the file transfer is small, cuasing the application to miscalcuate the file transferspeed, or perhaps, its just due to being on the same network.

A Poor SNR will NOT effect latency. Poor network configuration, or hub congestion WILL cause latency problems. If there is a drop in signal, you'll experience packetloss, which can negatively impact speeds (throughput).

Are all of these modems people talking about Docsis 3? If so, it could be that all of your channels aren't bonding, or ranging isn't complete.

That being said, I have 100mbps service from Comcast, and at peak usage (9p-12a) it drops to 15-30mbps. Even with 4 channels bonded (docsis 3). On a docsis 2 modem, provisioned for service @ 30mbps (only one channel) at peak I get 3-10mbps. It's an inherent part of cable that there will be slow downs the more people that are on.

Lynksys routers do have a cache file and are the worst when it comes to a speedtest.

The 34 ping time can be related to poor signal, not snr.

That is a brand new 1 gig plant there. Granted it could have a prob. but it'd be effecting alot more then one house.

                                    But what do I know......

Finally, someone who works there. Ill be calling sometime once I have free time again now that school is back up and running. Here is how I'm set up:

Cable outlet straight from outside of house from feed straight into modem. No splitters, same location, just straight into modem.

Modem goes straight into Airport Extreme-N router that is WPA secured. No one else on network.

The speeds of 15-20M are not my issue. The issues I have been having are the lowered speeds all the way to 1M down .11M up and with my ping up to 340ms+. I have averaged ping tests of 34-80ms. It has only been since I have emailed asking whats my connection issue when my ping time has dropped down to 12ms.

The ping is my real issue here. I can play xbox no problems with my average connections being in the 15-20 down/ 3 up range, but with ping times no consistent and very high is were it lags too much to even try and play.

On a docsis 2 modem, provisioned for service @ 30mbps (only one channel) at peak I get 3-10mbps. It's an inherent part of cable that there will be slow downs the more people that are on.

Exactly, through the years I have been familiar with congestion times with neighborhoods, but have not been having this much of an issue ever, especially with my ping times. I can deal with the 34-80ms pings, but once it gets higher I have no patience and constantly get kicked off xbox live hosts games.

Yup I'd call in. Did you purchase the modem, or r you renting? If renting, get a doc 3 modem. However get a tech out there.
