signal boosting
-
Sorry for starting another thread...but basically I am living maybe 200-300 meters away from one of the dorms that give off the school's wifi. Im not extremely tech savvy, but is there a way to capture this signal so that it is accessible to all of us in the apartment? what would i need to do this?
I know i should just pay for internet, but I am the only one subletting in the apartment right now and my 700 dollar a month rent for my room is killing me to pay for internet.

Which will only work if the return path from the APs at the dorms is strong enough to maintain a decent data rate.

Ichibahnkilla had an interesting setup that seemed to work well.
He took an old direct tv dish and put his wireless antenna right on the LNB mount and setup his dish on his camera tripod. Looked funny, but worked surprisingly well.
I have used high gain antennas in Pringles cans to make directional antennas, that also may work for you.

I have this...

Plugged in to a WRT54G... works pretty well, easily go a couple blocks and maintain a useable connection depending on what the signal has to go through.
