People here suck at merging; why make it more difficult for them ? The roads work better for everyone if you facilitate for the shortcomings of other drivers. If this doesn't slow you down, why not do it ?
When I'm merging, if people don't temporarily get out of the right lane when the middle/left is available, I just assume that they're inattentive or inconsiderate. I then feel no qualms about blowing past them on the right during the merge process with superior acceleration.

+1 ^ But then common courtesy has been pissed out the window nowadays. people are in a hurry to get nowhere.

I usually move over a lane as well, however if I can't (lane blocked OR I know I'm going to be getting off at the next exit) or if I merely didn't move over and someone honks at me because they don't know how to merge, I WILL slow down/wave/smile/whatever. Am I a dick? Yes, everyone knows this.
