Finally Fargo gets a good concert

FARGO - Hip-hop heavyweight Kanye West will play a concert at the Fargodome on May 25, West’s Web site lists the date and a local radio station plans to announce the show later today.

“We expect that it will be a huge show,” said Troy Dayton, program director at WDAY-FM 93.7, the top-40 station Y94. “It’s been a long time since a mainstream artist the caliber of Kanye West has ventured this far north into the frozen tundra.”

Y94 will be announcing the concert at 5 p.m.

A performance by West, a 10-time Grammy Award winner, would rank as one of the most prominent hip-hop shows in Fargo’s history, Dayton said, trumping the sold-out 2001 concert by Snoop Dogg. 50 Cent also played the Fargodome in 2003 to a crowd of about 10,000.

“This, I would venture to say, would be the biggest one ever if it goes off,” he said.

Opening for West will be N.E.R.D., the funk-rock/hip-hop band fronted by the duo of producers known as The Neptunes, as well as Lupe Fiasco, also a critically acclaimed Chicago rapper. R&B singer Rihanna, who is also opening for West on the tour being billed as Glow in the Dark, will not perform at the Fargodome show, Dayton said.

Ticket prices for the show will be $35, $55 and $75. Tickets go on sale on March 28, Dayton said.

News of the concert announcement, which Y94 initially planned to make on Friday, came out Wednesday after West’s Web site listed the gig. Rob Sobolik, general manager of the Fargodome, said this morning that he had not spoken with the promoters of the show in more than a week and that ticket prices and a date for the concert had not yet been set.
