North Dakota State middle linebacker Joe Mays was selected in the sixth round round by the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, April 27, in the National Football League Draft held in New York City. He was the 200th player selected.
"I'm just excited, that's the only word that can express what I'm feeling right now. This has been a dream of mine all my life to get a chance to play in the NFL. The funny thing of it is, the Philadelphia Eagles have been a favorite team of mine for a long time." said Mays. He will report to Philadelphia Eagles rookie mini-camp May 2-5.
"I can't wait to get there. I just want to contribute to the team anyway I can."
The last NDSU player picked in the NFL draft was center Rob Hunt in the fifth round by the Indianapolis Colts in 2005. Twenty-four Bison players have been selected in the NFL or Canadian Football League drafts since 1969.
"Short, stocky linebacker that made a tremendous amount of plays. Really jumped out at you when you watched film on him," said Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid during a draft recap on www.philadelphia.eagles.com.
"Even though it's a a smaller school, we just felt he was an exciting player to have."
Mays, a 5-foot-11, 245-pounder from Chicago, Ill. (Hyde Park H.S.), was the 2007 Great West Football Conference Defensive Player of the Year and played in the Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Challenge. He was named to the 2007 Walter Camp Football Foundation FCS All-America team and The Sports Network FCS All-America third team. Mays was a candidate for the Sports Network 's Buchanan Award.
Mays led North Dakota State with 90 tackles including 45 solo stops and nine tackles for loss last season. He is the program's all-time leader with 159 solo tackles. Mays had nine games with double-figure tackles including a career-high 14 tackles as a sophomore at Nicholls State (10-1-05). He had a career best nine solo tackles at UC Davis (10-22-05) including three tackles for loss and a career-high nine assisted tackles in the victory at Central Michigan (9-22-07).

so did ex bison punter Dragonovitch or whatever, by a good team though. The Pats.

drago went undrafted. i dont see him on the pats free agent aquisitions either.

i thought i saw it on the news...

Joe Mays is tha man! It's awesome to see him drafted. I've never seen a more exciting Bison football player in my life. Now the #1 and #2 tacklers in NDSU history are both in the NFC East:icon_cheers:
Anyone else go to the Green & Gold game on Saturday? Looks like Bohl's got another dominant team on his hands!

As far as I know Dahl is a FA. He tore his ACL in the NE game I believe it was and pretty sure he got let loose. Plus, the G-men drafted a safety=likely byebye Dahl.
Scouts, Inc has Mays running a 4.9 but I believe he ran a 4.6 at his pro day. Could be wrong though.
Lamar Gordon>Mays as far as exciting NDSU players go(but defensively I have no argument). Could have been a good pro too if he had some ambition.
Jason, how'd the QB look? On the recap it looked like he kind of threw a duck to Heckendork downfield. Scared me a bit.

Dang, I didn't realize he was cut. Hopefully someone will pick Dahl up.
I was a freshman when Gordon was a freshman and watched him play alot. He was the better player hands down but no one looked to be having as much fun as Joe Mays. He was on the Gold sidelines at last weekends game and was still jumping all over the place every time someone made a play. You're right about the 4.6 too:)
Mertens looked great. His first completion was a wounded duck but he settled down and looked sharp the rest of the day. I think he'll step right in and be fine. -

Thanks for the scouting report!
I was "balls" deep in the draft on that day unfortunately. Kirk will be joining me this year with season tickets so it better be a good season. I have a feeling if Roehl has the same caliber of season he will be getting a call on draft day as well.I agree with Mays having the most fun. Gordon just didn't have that ambition that Mays has. That is why I believe he will make a decent role player(mostly 1st and 2nd down and 3rd -n- short as he lacks hip fluidity to successfully cover the pass) in the pros. Should be fun to follow his progress. I've been talking to some Eagle rubes and they aren't completely thrilled but a few "informed" people believe he will be easily serviceable.

I know he is not dead. He replied to a text I sent him like a month ago. He was dead in the aspect of fargostreet.

Has anyone been following his progress this offseason? I have been keeping an eye on the Eagles organization during the preseason and he has shoe horned himself into the backup role right now. He led the team in tackles against the Pats last week with 8 total(i believe 7 unassisted). He earned a nickname during training camp as "Headbuster". He does have a legit chance, IMO, to start this season as the Eagles arent exactly stacked at the MLB spot(by stacked I mean awesome players not numbers lol). The guy ahead of him is much better in the pass but as of right now, Mays is a WAY better run stopper and just great at flowing to the ball. Not to mention, He's won over many Eagles fans so far!
If anyone is interested in following his progress(I guess it's kind of late now lol), the best site I found was this: www.philadelphiaeagles.com I mostly stick to reading the "On the Inside" column as it's a blog and not a "reporter" persay. I know there is atleast one video interview with him on the site, possibly more.
Related to this, former NDSU strong safety Craig Dahl was released last season by the Giants because of a torn ACL(tore it end of year last year against the Pats). His recovery went way better than expected and was something like 2 months ahead of schedule and got offered a contract again. He has a larger uphill battle to make the team as they just drafted a safety this year(Kenny Phillips) in the first round. I haven't followed this as closely because information is rather limited for him right now. I hope he makes it because he was making strides last year and got some real playing time by the end of the year. Wow that got long.
-The Bison Rube himself lol
PS: Drago is currently not on any NFL rosters, still working in town, he was handing some budweiser things out at the bar the other night lol. He's been working on the finer art of his punting. He didn't have the accuracy/consistancy to be an everyday NFL punter(and obviously teams aren't going to waste 2 roster spots on punters!). I'm sure he'll get a chance in the next year or two. It's like punters need to be 21 or anything either lol.
