FARGO - A three-car crash on South University Drive in Fargo Monday evening sent two people to the hospital for observation.
Shortly after 5 p.m., a white minivan and the black SUV that was following it were rear-ended by a gray-green Mercury coupe while traveling between Ninth and 10th Avenue South. The low profile of the coupe sent it under the black SUV. The minivan had only minor damage to its rear bumper.
“I was just driving along and then I felt the impact,” said Stephanie Tollefson, 22, of Fargo, who was driving the black SUV.
“All of a sudden I was looking down on top of the car in front of me. I just kept waiting for the car to come down and it never did,” she said.
Tollefson wasn’t hurt. The driver of the white van – a female with a baby in a car seat – and the driver of the coupe – a teenage male – were both believed to be uninjured, but were taken to MeritCare Hospital as a precaution, Fargo police officer Chris Bergem said.
Bergem did not know the speed the cars were traveling at the time of the crash, but said the coupe must have been going a “fair amount of speed” in order to crash under the SUV.
The names of the other drivers were not immediately available.
Rush-hour traffic was temporarily diverted to 11th Street South while the accident was cleared.
Bergem said it’s rare for a car to crash underneath another – but rear-end accidents are common during rush hour if drivers don’t pay attention their surroundings.
