Not exactly new technology, Crimestopper and Scytek have had phone interfaces for at least 12 years....of course there was no cool "app" to do it, but you could call your call and check its status, start the vehicle, unlock/lock the doors, etc... all at the push of a button from your phone. This basically looks like it does the same thing, only using SMS or MMS technology instead of tone based.
