I'm conducting some research on the differences between your perceptions of a small bank vs. a big bank. Any incite you could provide as to this is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

i asked my boss since he saw me reading your question, all he said was that your more personally known at the local/small bank and to when you go they dont ask you for your account number they just know you. and he said sometimes the big banks can usually bend some rules to get you things. thats all he said. if you have a specific question i can ask.

What exactly, in Fargo, is a small bank/big bank?

Honestly off the top of my head I can't think of any 'big' or 'small' banks. Around here they are all virtually the same.

Small: Gate City, State Bank, Vikings(I think thats the name?)

Big: Wells Fargo, Bank of the West, US Bank

At first I did it for fun, then I realized I made the investment and had to do it!

Big: Wells Fargo, Bank of the West, US Bank

For business banking, I like BoTW, Alerus and Wells Fargo. For personal banking, I'd say that Gate City and TCCU are amongst the best....but I haven't worked with all of them (obviously)

Thanks for the responses. I have talked to a few others as well and there seems to be a general consensus on that local banks "just know" you better...However, what if one was a regular at a local branch of say, U.S. Bank? Would this bank/branch then have the "know you better" perk in addition to having the ability to "bend" rules?

Possibly. As a business person (any business person) it is essential to build relationships with those institutions you rely on to do business. The more solid the relationship, the more likely they are to give you a helping hand. Working with the same banker(s) all the time only makes good business sense as it allows them to see more about you than just what shows up on a credit report. As for if there is an inherent advantage to using a larger bank....well, that kind of depends. Larger banks often have deeper pools of options/products available, whereas the small guy might have more flexible options with the products he does have.

this is kind of like the argument about walmart and why people are made so angry by it. walmart has low prices, good service, a vast array of products, and great hours... why not shop there? in this country, there seems to be this idea that the underdog is the better source of what we're seeking, but there's a reason that number one is number one.

that being said, there are some things that draw me to tccu (low interest rates, primarily), and some reasons that i bank with wells fargo (bonuses because of a mortgage that is held by them, better hours).

With my parents they got stuff at Gate City, Cornerstone (small banks) and Wells Fargo, but with my processes of it depositing stuff and dealing with it, Wells Fargo is a lot faster at stuff because they dont have to go thru every single detail I dont believe because sometimes I will be sitting at Gate City drive up for probably 5-10 min with just a simple deposit... Dunno what they do differently inside but just is a pain in the ass...

My parents have done all of their banking/loans/checking for their business through State Bank and Trust and they have never had a problem. I however, do not like The West Fargo or Moorhead State Bank locations. Only the 13th and 32nd St locaton.

I think it has a lot to do with whos working. Sometimes I go in and out at Gate City in 3 mins with getting cash from my deposit, but other times its like 10-15mins and the person is just staring at the screen. The Moorhead one always remembers my name, and my family, even the manager that I basically never deal with personally.
