From the mouth of a cop regarding the exhaust tickets.
-
Sorry to make a new topic about this, but this is what was said by a cop.
Kelly (the girl with the blue civic) talked to a cop tonight at Stop-n-Go by Red Lobster about the new exhaust bullshit, and from what he said the chief of police HATES modified imports and bikes (the cop didn't mention muscle cars) and the cops are supposed to pull people over for exhaust and use it as an excuse to write up "modified vehicle" tickets for EVERYTHING aftermarket done to the cars. The cop specifically mentioned imports and bikes, but didn't say anything about muscle cars or redneck trucks (take that how you want). They are told not to write up "fix-it tickets" or give warnings, they are being told to write out fines.
I don't look at this as unfair to just the people with the cars, I am also saying this is not fair at all to the people whose sole income is based on putting the aftermarket parts on the cars.
I'm not saying everyone should start crying and bitching, but I am saying that we NEED to keep an eye out for who is really being affected by this so we can try to do something about it. And as Tufte said in the other thread, please leave this to the older, more mature people in the scene, or it will only get worse.

i agree. thats the way it should be. but if you do get a ticket and you feel like you don't deserve it, go to court and defend yourself. you know if your car is loud or not. no really , you KNOW if your car is loud or not. no amount of bitching about how some ford with straight pipes is just as loud as your car will fix it. if you have a civic (or whatever other car) with a blast can that sounds like a cracked out weed wacker under normal acceleraton, you'll probably get a ticket. your car is obnoxious. i think its kind of a bitch leaving it up to the officers disgression, without any kind of db limit, but whatever, we don't make the laws, we just have to deal with them. and as far as 'modified car' tickets, most mods aren't illegal, go to court and defend yourself. however some stuff like headlights and test pipes and things that are obviously not street legal (and say so on the package) could be ticketed. my personal plan is to keep my car on the dl and dont make it stand out. when i get an exhaust it will have 2 resonators (or 1 resonator and a hi-flow cat) and a high quality muffler that is tested to be below 80db. if it does become a situation where cops are singleing out ppl and pulling them over just because they see a modification or an exhaust, then that will have to be something to deal with. they are doing this kind of thing in california and even in minneapolis, going so far as impounding ppls cars and shit like that, so be happy they are just talking fines.

also, i do think this IS a problem that needs to be addressed. i live near 25th street and 32nd avenue and listening to some of these ppl go up and down the street at all hours of the AM at high rpms and obnoxious levels of noise, waking me up by the way, IS FUCKING ANNOYING.

hmm this is going to bite and I guess the real test will be to see how many of us domestic guys get pulled over in comparison to the import guys. but I agree that all the kids on this site should stay out of this. not to say that you guys might not know what you're talking about, but you're age will play a role with the police and they won't take you seriously. it's a terrible thing but it's how it works.
I am one for taking the legal route to problems so I think perhaps the best way to resolve this would be for all of us to observe the situation and look at all the laws and which ones are legal and which ones are not. Cops do have to follow the law and areheld to a higher standard then the rest of us. So if this is a harassment issue I think that we would be able to make a decent case about it. After all this is ND and it has an old school republican goverment behind it.
So please lets not bitch about this one too much, but instead accept it, best case it will get all the idiots out of the scene and just leave the guys that are serious and respectful to thier passion. -
i guess it will suck to be me and i will post every time i get a ticket for this too!!!

There is a lot of unknown information to the public. But from talking to the people from the Forum about the press release about the exhaust issues, that is just the start of what is to come, so be prepared for more.do you have any idea what else they are going to do?

well I was reading through fargo city code and it appears that resinators are legal, not sure if fart cans classify under that. if you are curious as to where to find this, i got to it by going to http://www.fargopd.com as a matter of law all regulations and codes must be available to the public.
on an off note I read in there a regulation stating that all vehicles MUST have a horn. Also it made it seem as though BOV's are not legal. maybe it was just worded funny, but it really got me.

86fc3s-ummmm, guess what, modifying a car is illegal, cops just don't enforce it yet. Just because the part you buy says "50 state legal" doesn't mean that it is, it means that it can pass emmissions or safety standards in all 50 states. The parts that aren't "50 state legal" are "for offroad use only."
Hence the modified vehicle tickets, If you modify a vehicle you can get a ticket for it.

WOW
this could get ugly in a hurry.
sure hope the deal with BOV being illegal in false. as they come on many stock turbo vehicles right?as for the bumblebee exhaust....what benefits to performance do you gain from it?
i know freeflowing is a definite benefit when it comes to gaining horses and torque, but does it have to be "loud" to get these benefits?how many older folks do you know that were or are involved in the musclecar scene? can any insight be gained from their past experiences? as i am sure they got hassled in the past.

Ok, I sent an email to the fargopd regarding some clarification on this matter. I asked them what, if any, guidelines the officers have to follow regarding exhaust noise and if they did intend to enforce these ordinances across the board. I didn't accuse them of anything, I just asked for their opinions on what constitutes a ticket. I asked if I can expect to see muscle cars and pickup trucks enforced at the same level as "speed racers". I explained that most of us would be happy to comply if we knew what we had to comply with.
