i have been pulled over by highway patrol as well as my cousin with an 83(i think) iroc and they have asked where they were but never said it was illegal or gotten a ticket for it. He said they were grandfathered in just like model t's with seatbelts ect. If you want to get technical, anything other then factory equipment on a vehicle is ILLEGAL. If you were to add a bracket to the front bumper it would not be factory equipment and grounds for a fine as well...

I suppose if your car wasnt made from the manufacturer to have one then it could slide. All other cases, fuck off. Pussy up and put the damn thing on. You dont need to get a ticket just so you can "look cool" by not having a front plate. Stupid stuborn kids.
end of rant, sorry touchy subject

When I put on the brand new front bumper on my car, I went right ahead and took the drill to it, and drilled the holes and mounted my bracket and plate. Just what you have to do when you live in a state that requires a front license plate, just have to live with it. Sure, I would have preferred not to drill into the front clip that I had just spent a lot of money on, and time priming/painting it, but it's just what one has to do. I don't have to worry about violation tickets or anything either.
What I don't get is the people that have the front plate on the dash on the inside. It's not legal to have no front plate attached to the bumper, so why bother having it on the dash? Has ANYONE encountered a police officer that said "well, it's illegal to have no front plate, but since you have it inside the car, well, then that's okay...". Furthermore it looks even worse to have that thing on the dash IMO.
Some people I know use velcro and such. I still drive my car on the street enough to warrant the plate attached to the car at all times, though the track/street ratio has been getting closer and closer.

So when I did my bumper swap I just stuck my plate in the passenger side front windshield. I kinda hoped that if I got stopped for it, the cop would just warn me about it and tell me to mount it back on the bumper.
I don't know, at least in the window, I'm making an effort to show my plate numbers...
Edit: Oh yeah, and those online petitions are worthless sadly

not a big enough reason for it, if there was then every other state should look into it. its worthless in my eyes. but i have only lived in states that didnt require them.
i have been pulled over 3 times since being here and they never said anything about me not having one

aren't all cars either made for it or have a bracket available for it? I don't understand the difference. Especially since you pay for 2 of them. Now if there was a discount to buy one, I'd sign it. How about those of us with custom plates? I like having it on the front and the back.Oh I defiantly agree!!

Officer: "And I am also pulling you over because you have no front license plate.."
Guy with no front plate: "Well, I don't have a bracket for it"
Officer: "Oh, ok, let me just scratch that off of this warning ticket then. Alright, you're free to go, have a good day and drive safely!"

It just said that the plates have to be dispayed in an upright position on the front and the back of the vehicle. Which is a very broad description, so technically in your windshield, as long as it's displayed properly there, should be legal. But then again we all know how some cops seem to make up the laws as they go. -
laying it on your dash is not upright. and unless you are driving a bus, the windshield is in the middle of the car typically.
And the being grandfathered in thing? Every vehicle by law is required to have seat belts, there is no grandfathering. I checked into it and ran the risk of getting the tickets. I don't have front seatbelts in my car.(Put them in to go thru a dui checkpoint a few weeks ago, not using them, taking them out again this weekend)
Logical reason: Identification. three firebirds white, same years, styles, conditions. 2 leave parking lot nicely, one does something stupid. which one? no one knows! someone may need to get the idiot off the street. (Note: Woulda used brians camaro color but I don't know what it is.)

does anyone know the real reason for them being on the front?
i have yet to think of a logical reasonI know and use a reason every day Im at work. Drive off prevention. I check out the licence # on the cars that start pumping gas all the time. If there wasnt one on the front, I wouldnt see most cars plates.

that's because you have a V8 and somthing domestic....duhYeah, thats the exact reason why.
Some of you guys are getting pretty uptight about this. This is suprising comming from a board that advocates having illgeal parts on your car (engine mods, suspension mods, lowering, illegal lighting, illegal exhaust, etc etc.)
