It's gonna be REALLY tight, always is. Find a locking pliers that will fit between the two pins and close it enough(on the base of the handle) so when you try to clamp it shut, you can barely shut it. While its clamped, rock it top to bottom. Open it back up and close it a quarter or half of a turn and repeat the process until you can put the clip in.
