Need help with Volkswagon.

Hey guys, maybe you all can help me out. My grandma has a 2000 1.9T turbo diesel bug with 33k miles, and she is having some problems with it, that I am tyrying to diagnose for her. The car just has no power. Taking it out on to the interestate it will putz up to 75 or so, and then there is no accelerating after that. I had driven the car before and know it was just more responsive then it is now. I did try disconnecting the battery and letting it sit for a while. But, the car has no CELs or anything for me to go on. Should I check the turbo, could it be a clogged cat? I'm completely unfamiliar with these cars. Where do I start?

Yeah, they only have like 90 hp or whatever, but enough torque. I would start by checking the turbo, if that seems ok, just put your hand by the tail pipe, you should be able to tell if the exhaust is clogged anywhere, then I would change the fuel filter. Fuel is the most important thing in diesels, so you might want to start with the fuel filter. Good luck.

i just talked to my dad, he said the first thing would be checking fuel filter and airfilter. if it something wrong with fuel system it miss and smoke and get terrible mileage. the majority off stuff that comes to there shop with power complaints is one off those to things. if the fuel filter hasnt been changed i would start there

When a 1.9L TDI diesel engine exhibits a lack or power and/or poor acceleration, proceed as follows:

Check the intake manifold for excessive carbon buildup and clean as necessary. Remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve to gain access and inspect the passages.

Using a full function factory compatible scan tool, verify Mass Airflow (MAF) readings as follows:
NOTE: The following tests must be performed on a warm engine. -
Start and idle the vehicle. Enter Engine Address Word 01, Function 08 Read Measuring Blocks and Display Group 003.

Observe the 2nd (air mass drawn in specified) and 3rd (air mass drawn in actual) display fields. Both fields should match (typical idle range is 230-370 mg/H).

Enter Engine Address Word 01, Function 08 Read Measuring Blocks and Display Group 010. Observe the first (air mass drawn in) 3rd (Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP)-Boost) and 4th (throttle position) display fields.

Perform a Wide Open Throttle (WOT) acceleration from 35 MPH in 3rd gear and record the displayed values in fields 1 and 3 at 3,000 RPM and display field 4 showing 100% throttle. Field 1 should show in excess of 810 mg/H and field 3 should show between 1,700 to 2,080 mbar of available boost (optimum readings are 1,850 to 1,950 mbar).

Lower than normal MAF readings indicate a potential plugged intake or a faulty MAF.
