I'm looking to buy an 02-05 WRX or 2.5RS here in the near future, and I'd like to know what to look for as far as problems go. Are there any problems that are fairly prevalent that I should look for when buying one? Also, obviously depending on how hard it was used and how well it was maintained, what is their average lifespan before major problems start occurring? In other words - do they pretty readily last up into the higher mileage range, like 150-200k or more?

i c that they last into the high mileage. the main thing to look for is how the transmission shifts and feels. Thats the main thing. if it feels smooth like butter than its golden. There arent many other problems with them. make sure the clutch is in good shape because those are expensive. the subarus ecu is very sensitive so if there is something wrong with the motor it will throw a code, ( check engine Light), so bring a code reader and drive it around long enough to see if it will throw one if possible.

higher mileage 02-03 wrx have been known to have rod-bearing issues, definitely check on/around turbo housing/pipes to see if someone has modded and returned to stock. Too many people do up/down/exhaust and tune, then return to stock and clear codes for a sale. derek is right though, tranny is the biggest issue.

            ^That car is long sold!

If you look at a 2002(some of the newer ones have the problem, but not as common) it might need to have a fuel line replaced under the intake manifold. When its cold it leaks and makes the whole car smell like gas.

as mentioned there can be a raw gas smell in winter.
yeah look at the clutch and tranny check em over good.
pay attention to any modifications made, ask if all codes accommodate the mods.
turbos arent cheap to replace so check that over good too. most ppl buy wrxs to drive like its a wrx so take that into consideration as well.

I heard that they are even more than grand prix headlights, so you know they aren't cheap.

I think I have the highest mileage WRX in the area. So far i've replaced transmission ( my fault very hard on it) and wheel bearings. Otherwise just usual maitenance stuff.
