I have been seeing lots of "modded" grandprix/sunfire/cavaliers/new cougars as of late. Now my question is (honest question, not hating):

Why do people bother with "modding" these cars? Do they have the history/technology/parts to be fast or even handle well?

I looked at pricing, and even though I rag on building hondas as "race" cars, the base model is signifigantly cheaper and I know they have the tech/history to build them to a certain level. Is this the case with these cars?

The one that confuses me the most is the Grandprix. Maybe if they were rear-wheel, but I just don't see the point.

    Can someone explain?

Please keep the useless posts to a limit

I know that the supercharged models have good power potential (Obviously being boosted helps). But, I am with you on the rest of it. They are a pig and handle like it. The one I never figured out is why on earth would people supercharge a quad4 based Cavi/Sunfire? It's like cuting the wick off within millimeters from a bomb and lighting it. But, to each their own.

The only thing I can come up with in their defense is.... Because their parents are buying these kids their cars, they don't have alot of say in what they are getting. The insurance is cheap with alot of domestic cars and so is the price (usually) so the parents buy this shit for their kids. Well, just like when cars were first made, they will always try to build them no matter what the car.

For a laugh you should post this on the NA forums but be prepared to be cruscified. They love them damn things over there. As someone else quoted, "There big ugly girl cars", or something close to that at least. I know they like to turbo them and there's some decent engine mods but, yeah, I agree with you. Not so much on the grand prix.

The 3.8L is a pretty decent platform the lack of a front-whell drive manual transmission really holds them back. You have to give credit to the V6 Camaro guys that are tuning cars to beat the V8 cars. The cavalier and sunfires are unexplainable but I can understand building a 3.8L

I think alot of it is there young kids and are not informed to know anything different. Think back to your very first car. I think everybody has had a ricer stage until they actually did some research.

I modded my GP! But not much. LOL!

You can make a low 13 sec. GTP pretty easily.

from my expirence alot of people that are into cars are just misinformed, they dont know anything that is true fact. They see a car and something that is done to it and dont know that for the dollar or even at all, it wont be worth it to do to thier car. To alot of people, exspecially new comers to cars, a car is a car simple as that. So i guess what i meant to say and said origionally is mis education is the reason that you see people doing things to cars like that.

Nothing can knock the ugly out of the gran prix.

In every other place I've lived, Gran Prix's and other fugly american cars are only used in rental fleets.

Here, everyone drives them. It boggles the mind.

It doesn't matter how fast you can make it, you can't beat the fugly out of the things, and they'll still be FWD automatics.

My initial thought on how to respond to the first post was "why do people mod base model civics? Not like those are fast/worth a shit either", but I didn't expect someone to actually defend the GP and distract me.

I made no mods at all to my first car. It was a 1970 cutlass 2 door with a 350 v8. All it did was make a V8 sound when you floored it. I blew the motor the first summer I had it, and then after paying some rednecks to swap an 83 engine into it, I t-boned a tree with it on icy roads.

It sucked, but at least it was RWD.

Youth is no excuse for bad taste and doing rice mods on lame cars.

Ok, if bashing the Grand Prix is your thing then I dont even want to know what you guys think of a modded Buick Regal.

I picked to buy my Regal (my money, my decision) for quite a few reasons.

                              A) Not many modded Regals exist.

                              B) The 3800 can make lots of power, especially with a turbo. The downfall is the tranny. Both FWD and Automatic. Even the HD versions break above 300HP.

                              C) I know and understand GM's cars. Its what i grew up on, its what ive always had my hands on. Maybe thats good or bad... but its the way it is. Beyond the basics I dont understand any other car make.

                              D) My first car was a W-body, so I researched into the W-body/3800 platform.

                              E) Price. I was able to find a good deal on my Regal. I searched for a well maintained vehicle with very limited income. I found great cars but they were all either beat to shit or too expensive.

The Regal might not always be limited by the 3800. I know that a small block could fit under that hood.

Not saying Ill always be into the 3800, but for now Im happy. Isn't that really what its about? Looking at something that is 100% yours and knowing that you made it the way it is? I doubt Ill ever be done with my Regal, but if I were to do everything I want to do to it I'd get the respect from the people I want respect from; Those who appreciate the hard work that goes into a car.

If I'm not welcome here because I mod MY car the way I want... then i'll never sign on again. I don't bash, I dont spam and I can provide knowledge (with help) on a very common platform of cars.

This is aimed towards the Pontiac doosh on the first page:

Good friend of mine turbo'ed the D16 in his 92 Civic EX. 273k miles on it. Ran a 13.0 on a turbo setup of DSM parts.

And it looked better than a Pontiac Grand Prix, Am, or whatever they are.

The only V6's that GM produced that was worth a shit was in the Grand National, and the Syclone/Typhoon.[/thread]

You seriously think that a 92 civic looks better than a Grand Prix. Did you eat paint chips as a child?:icon_scratch:
I love the Grand Prix's not a hot rod by a long shot but when your driving one its not like sitting on a floor jack either. Who the hell ever thought a FWD car, much less a honda one, could handle. RWD owns all.

I see 2 cars...1 can handle and is probably pretty fast, the other is a boat on wheels and body rolls like a mother...Any civic is sexier than any grand prix or grand am ever made...

I'd rather have a stiff suspension and be able to fly round curves then sit in a boat and feel like your gonna tip over every time u turn...

I would love to see a 13 sec GP on under $1000. (not parts that are DIY). does not included the new GXP

You sure talk alot about how much better RWD and domestics are than whatever else for driving a piece of shit. I would put my money on a stock civic to out handle your car anyday.

Anyways, i can see modding a 3800 sc for drag racing but that is about it. They can be made reasonably fast for not too much money, but the trannys are absolutely garbage and auto sucks. The rest of the cars i wonder about tho....
