Cam and ignition timing
-
Alright so in trying to find this bastard tick I got a wild hair up my ass and decided to check the cam timing. It was one tooth off counterclockwise at #1 TDC. heres where it sits now, this is correct isn't it?

so assuming this is correct, i put it all back together and fired her up.
now the ignition timing is fucked up.according to my timing light, #1 is firing damn near exactly TDC, no where near 18 BTDC where it is supposed to be. You can only adjust a few degrees either way using the distributor. Needless to say it runs like ass, but it does sound a bit happier.
any ideas?
(BTW for some reason I had it in my head that hondas weren't supposed to be as big a pain in the ass as DSMs shrug)

no, its a pretty damn important difference tho. on a D16a6 there is a mark at approx 7 oclock on the cam gear which needs to line up with a small arrow on the timing belt cover. this is different from a d15 where you have to line the marks at 3 and 9 oclock up with the deck. the FSM doesn't mention shit about the proper way to set up a d16 it only shows the procedure for the D15 so it looked like my cam timing was off a tooth. it wasn't. just seems like something you might need to know. I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it wasnt in a haynes or chilton manual, they have a tendancy to lump different models together and leave out the specifics to save space. This is the goddamn FSM tho, and this is need to know information. Shitty shit is shitty.

k here is how you time ALL d series motors.....
- qut being a retard (j/k, but not really)
- line the tdc mark( this is the only mark all alone on the pulley) on the crank pulley to the plastic protrution on the timing bet cover. ( fuck yur o' clock measurements)
- line the side marks on the cam gear so they are level with the head/block, NOT the ground, car, fender, w/e...
- zero the dizzy (that means center)
- install timing belt or slip it back on w/e
- start car and with the use of a trusty timing light turn the dizzy till the flashy light hits the center mark out of the 3 marks off on there own.
tighten down dizzy bolts.....
and done

heres how you time a d16a6 if you are drifter extreme
- Stop smelling your own farts
- line the tdc mark( this is the only mark all alone on the pulley) on the crank pulley to the plastic protrution on the timing bet cover. The oclock measurements are for the cam gear, dick, there's no point of reference on the crank pulley.
- realize your timing is retarded 18 degrees because you are a know it all twat.
- search honda-tech and find out the cam timing is different on a d16a6 and there is a possibility you might not have known something about hondas.
- call your mom
- cry
- go back and find the line on the cam pulley at 7 fucking oclock, line that up with the arrow on the protrusion of the timing cover directly below the cam gear, not the one you used to put the crank at tdc.
- repeat steps four through 6 with a little more goddamn humility.
- hope nobody saw you fuck up
- start smelling your own farts again
j/k, but not really, douche
