cavi electrical demon
-
looking for anythoughts on this or if anyone has delt with it.
My friend has like a 99 cavi 4 banger, he is having electrical issues that make it seem like the alternator is going out, but he had that tested and it was good. he did cross the points on the alternator with a wrench or something and made it spark.
symptoms- dimm dashlights, dim head lights, low power for everything, dies, I think he said it will run if he jumps it, and all the dash lights freak out when it's running.
I havn't had a chance to look at it and he's not a big car guy, but I wanted to see what you guys thought. he's wondering if it will be worth fixing.

It sounds like alternator to me. It will run when jumpstarted but will die shortly after because the alternator is not charging to recharge the battery hence the car runs off of the battery and if the battery isnt fully charged, it wont last long. And thats why all of the stuff on the instrument cluster is wacky.

I did that once and it blew the main fuse under the hood(on mine at least), it may have done the same but not burned quite all the way through, fuses can do that from time to time. When in doubt, check the fuses first.

I'd check your main grounding points to see if any are loose/corroded

If the alternator tests good check your ground cable conections and clean them up and make sure all your battery cables are in good shape an there's no corrosion everywhere...I had a prelude one time that had a new alternator in it, turns out it was just the ground cable was corroded where it connects to the frame...

k, good to hear your thoughts on it, most of you are thinking about the same as me, I wanted to get some opinions before I really looked at it, to see if I can save him some money.
