i thought the cayman and boxster were mid-engine not rear engine, BIG difference.

Cars specifically designed to be convertibles tend to do better than those that were "converted" into ragtops as a marketing technique. So, I'd say that yes the boxster was designed for drop top operation, but I'd be willing to bet that the Cayman can outperform it due to the added structural benefit of having a roof.
