The dvr does function as an HD tuner, but If your TV has an HD tuner built in you can get the locals in HD and some other channels with your regular subscription, mine doesn't have a built in HD tuner so I use antenna, but my friend tony's TV does and it automatically adds the HD channels to the list, no extra cost. They'd love you to get that DVR and the $10 HD tier tho
